What members are saying

Why is it so important to become a SHAPE America member?

When I stepped into my first national convention, simply being in the presence of thousands of physical educators was powerful. My passion was reignited in part by existing in the same space as so many like-minded people.

Jonathan Jones (member since 2016)
2018 SHAPE Maryland Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year

What resources does SHAPE America offer you?

Every teacher needs to prioritize his or her plan to promote continued learning when they are finished with their post-secondary experience. Being a member of SHAPE America is a fantastic choice for future physical educators as they are presented with so many resources when they start their careers. Attending a conference almost guarantees new professional connections and friendships.

Ms. Jenny Smith (member since 2004)
Iowa State University, IA

What is it so important to be a SHAPE America membership?

There are many reasons to become a member, but I believe the most important is the energy and camaraderie while attending conferences with like-minded professionals. For 37 years, I have encouraged my students to join their national and state organizations. This is something I can’t teach, it is something students must experience.

Dr. Barry Lavay (member since 1974)
Retired Professor at California State University at Long Beach, CA

Why do you appreciate the SHAPE America membership so much?

Membership has provided me with access to other member’s ideas – for instance, because of a colleague’s suggestion at the annual SHAPE America convention, I tweaked my own school's needs by completely changing how we manage our Field Day! Friendships are made at conventions, and you can reach out to them if you need a new idea for teaching a unit or have an administrator/district concern-these things are invaluable.
