Call for Proposals: Student Research Works-in-Progress

The SHAPE America Research Council offers university students at all levels the opportunity to share their ongoing research projects in a poster presentation and receive feedback from experienced scholars.

This poster session will be held during the 2023 SHAPE America National Convention & Expo in Seattle, March 28 – April 1. Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline to submit an abstract for this session is Tuesday, February 7.

How to Participate

Send an email to [email protected] with the following information:

  • Student name
  • School
  • Student email address
  • Project title
  • Discipline area (select from list below)
  • Abstract (up to 250 words) describing the project's purpose/research question(s), background literature/theoretical framework as appropriate, method and timeline

Please ensure the subject line of your email includes: Student Research Works-in-Progress Abstract.

Prior to the convention, you will receive information on how to prepare your poster. To participate, you must be a registered convention attendee, although it is acceptable to send in the abstract prior to registering for the convention.

Research projects shared during the poster session are in various stages of completion and have not undergone peer review. Therefore, they are displayed for professional development purposes only and should not be considered professional research presentations for vita purposes. In addition, abstract titles and author names will not be included in the convention program.

Participate in the SHAPE America College Bowl!

Wednesday, March 29

In Jeopardy-style, undergraduate/post-baccalaureate teams of 1-4 students from colleges and universities will come together for a friendly, yet competitive battle of the minds!

Spectators are welcome and are encouraged to cheer on your students/friends, root for your alma mater, and test your own ability to answer the questions!

If you're interested in participating as a team you must RSVP by March 20.

Student Opportunities at #SHAPEseattle

With so much going on at the national convention, sometimes it’s hard to know where to start! Here are some sessions and opportunities that will help you make the most of your #SHAPEseattle experience:

  • Undergraduate Student Leadership Forum — This event is a must-attend forum for ALL students. It’s your chance to engage with your peers and network with professionals! Learn how to become a leader and an advocate for yourself, SHAPE America, and the HPE profession.
  • Student and First-Time Attendee Orientation — Kick off convention right with this session held on Tuesday, March 28 at 2:30 p.m. before the Opening General Session. You’ll hear inspiring remarks from one of our Board members and member ambassadors, get all your convention questions answered, and get to know other students and first-time attendees!
  • Graduate Student Forum — If you have questions about the research process, are unsure of how to delegate or receive authorship responsibilities, or are curious about how to craft a response to a journal editor after a rejection — this ethics and etiquette forum is for you! This session will include key questions and themes that address various ethical situations and tips on personal and professional conduct. Graduate students will be able to ask various faculty members about ethical practices that they carry out in their labs/programs.
  • Opening General Session and Closing General Session — You’ll love the energy and inspiring keynote speakers at these general sessions!
  • Opening Celebration — Join us for drinks, music and a great time!
  • Stop by the Exhibit Hall — It’s important to stay up-to-date on all the resources available for our profession. And you’ll find all the latest HPE gear in the exhibit hall! You can also purchase books at a discounted price. Be sure to stop by the SHAPE America Resource Center and Store, where you can buy limited edition SHAPE America branded merchandise!
