FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

SHAPE America and Gopher Announce 2020 Impact School Grant Recipients

RESTON, VA, February 25, 2021 — SHAPE America – Society of Health and Physical Educators and Gopher, announced today the selection of five SHAPE America Impact School grant recipients as part of a partnership to improve existing health and physical education programs across the country. The selected grantees include Title I elementary and middle schools from four states, with free and reduced lunch ranging from 66%-100%.

Congratulations to this year’s SHAPE America Impact Schools, which were selected through the SHAPE America Impact Schools Grant Program:

  • P.S 154 Jonathan D Hyatt, Bronx, NY
  • Dundee Elementary School, Dundee, MS
  • Brooklyn UD #188 Lovejoy Technology Academy, Lovejoy, IL
  • Fort Gay PreK-8 School, Fort Gay, WV
  • PS/MS 72 The Lexington Academy, New York, NY

In the year ahead, these five schools will benefit from free professional development and much-needed funds raised through the "Big Feats for SHAPE America" (Big Feats) Virtual Race.

"Over the last two years, we have seen such an incredible impact for the schools that have received grants through this program,” said SHAPE America CEO Stephanie Morris. “This year, with the challenges faced by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever to support high-needs schools.”

The Big Feats Virtual Race begins on March 1 and culminates on April 17 during the 2021 SHAPE America Virtual National Convention & Expo. Participants across the country will set their own movement and/or distance goals and complete the race on their own time, at their own pace — all while raising money through their personal networks. Big Feats Virtual Race activities and challenges will be highlighted throughout the SHAPE America virtual national convention.

Eighty percent of the funds raised by the Big Feats Virtual Race will be allocated to the five Impact Schools. Each school will receive a free membership to SHAPE America, which includes access to an array of curriculum resources including SHAPE America's National Standards and Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education, Appropriate Practices for Health Education and online professional development. In addition, one health and physical education teacher from each of the schools will receive a $1,000 stipend from Gopher to use toward professional development resources including attending the 2021 SHAPE America Virtual National Convention & Expo. The remaining proceeds from the Big Feats Virtual Race will fund health and physical education advocacy efforts and professional development at the state and national levels.

In addition to these opportunities, Gopher is honored to continue their 100% match for recipients of the funds raised through SHAPE America’s Big Feats Virtual Race! Schools that choose to redeem the funds raised through the program with Gopher will receive a 1:1 match, doubling the support for health and physical education locally.

“As the national partner for the Big Feats Virtual Race, we are excited to amplify the impact this program will have on the physical education programs and physical activity of students at these schools by doubling their spending power,” said Matt Ginskey, VP of Marketing at Gopher. “We are proud of the impact of this program and — as we enter the third year of our partnership with SHAPE America — remain fully committed to supporting health and physical education professionals, schools and local communities.”

New this year, SHAPE America is expanding our giveback opportunities to corporate partners through a new Employee Wellness engagement opportunity, known as the “Wellness 4 Good” Challenge. The seven-week challenge brings employee wellness to life through an effective and fun approach that encourages employees to get moving to support a worthy cause. Aligned with the Big Feats Virtual Race (March 1-April 17), employees select their own movement or physical activity goal and complete the race on their own time, at their own pace — all while raising money to support the Impact School grantees.

Participating employers will receive a Wellness 4 Good Challenge Packet, which provides a template for the seven-week health/wellness challenge, including email templates and links to additional resources. Universities are also encouraged to consider participating in the Wellness 4 Good Challenge and using the Big Feats Virtual Race as a community service project for students. Interested organizations should complete the Wellness 4 Good Interest Form.

Individuals who are interested in signing up for the virtual race or making a monetary donation can do so beginning on March 1. Individual registration is $25 and includes a medal and a digital race bib.
