Guidance Documents & Position Statements
Guidance Documents
Guidance documents provide a widely accepted protocol on a variety of topics. Although guidance documents communicate information that is widely accepted and used in the profession, guidance documents are not official position statements.
▶
Physical Education
SHAPE America recommends that schools provide 150 minutes of instructional physical education for elementary school children, and 225 minutes for middle and high school students per week for the entire school year. A quality physical education program provides learning opportunities, appropriate instruction, meaningful and challenging content and student and program assessment.
▶
Physical Activity
The 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that children and adolescents engage in 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. Schools provide an ideal place for students to access opportunities to be physically active. Students can meet the nationally recommended number of minutes of daily physical activity, with physical education serving as the foundation.
▶
School Health
Health education curricula provide at least 60 hours of instruction time per academic year, as prescribed in the National Health Education Standards (Joint Committee, 2007).
Position Statements
SHAPE America develops position statements about key topics in physical education, physical activity, school health. They are written by content experts to produce the most accurate, valuable information available. The position statements are provided in an electronic format that you can read easily, and print to share with others.
