SHAPE America is pleased to announce new convention programming designed specifically for the Higher Education community!

The inaugural Higher Education and Professional Preparation Summit will cover relevant topics within the field of professional preparation and professional practice in health education, physical education, physical activity, and sport pedagogy. Join us for panel presentations and roundtable discussions on improving student recruitment, strengthening teaching and learning practices, and more!

Then, continue building relationships at a networking social immediately following the summit, hosted by SHAPE America’s Professional Preparation Council.  All HEPPS sessions are included with full convention registration (a one-day registration to the convention is also available).

Recruitment and Retention: Moving Forward, Now What?

It is well known that recruitment and retention for educational programs, especially health and physical education is suffering. However, there are several examples nationwide that have suggested specific strategies can be employed to increase enrollment and retention of students. During this session we use specific examples of success as well as discuss how to move the field forward to increase enrollment and student retention throughout the undergraduate and graduate experience.

The State of edTPA - What Do We Know About Preparing Teacher Candidates?

edTPA is a reality for teacher preparation programs in many states. In this session, we will examine some of the data on how health and physical education teacher candidates are faring on the assessment. We will then present some effective strategies for preparing our students for this high stakes evaluation. 

Including SEL in Your Higher Education Curriculum

Do you want to include SEL in your HPE teacher preparation but aren’t sure where to begin? Join us to learn how various HETE and PETE programs are teaching personal and social responsibility in teacher preparation and how they are integrating SEL into all courses using backwards design. Following the presentations, join us for an open discussion of SEL in HPE teacher preparation.

Conversations Beyond the SHAPE CAEP SPA Era

Recently, SHAPE America announced they will no longer be supporting CAEP SPA accreditation. This session will address the current state of Higher Education Standards for both PE and Health. Discussion will take place around how to move forward in a post-SHAPE America/CAEP era. The conversation from this session will contribute to a guidance document that will be put together by the teacher preparation council. 

How to Incorporate health. moves. minds. Into Your Higher Education Classroom

The health. moves. minds.® program is an innovative way for physical and health educators to not only inspire healthy habits that fuel active minds and emotional well-being, but also supports the funding mechanisms that can foster a culture of school health. This presentation will discuss information about health. moves. minds. and how it can be integrated into pre-service teachers preparation in higher education. Additionally, success stories will be shared from champions in the field.
