Friday’s Closing General Session will include a keynote presentation by Darrion Cockrell, elementary PE teacher and Missouri’s 2021 Teacher of the Year.
Not long after his sixth birthday, Darrion Cockrell began his journey in and out of Missouri’s foster care system. He credits educators with helping him overcome many of life’s hurdles — and as a teenager he was adopted by his middle school football coach.
Today, Cockrell — or “Mr. DC” as he is known at Crestwood Elementary School in St. Louis — is a role model for his K-5 students and an inspiration to his fellow teachers. He focuses on creating relationships that support the importance of staying active and healthy and is the creator of the “Crest-Fit” training program, which has helped thousands of people over the years.
